PublicNews18: At least 19 people, including 18 members of the fire extinguisher, were killed in an attempt to extinguish a fire in a forest in Sichuan province, China.
According to the Chinese news agency Xinhua, the accident occurred on Tuesday morning when the wind suddenly changed,
causing a group of firefighters to surround the fire. The forest fire has now covered a thousand hectares of land.
More than 2,000 rescue workers and firefighting personnel were dispatched to control the fire. About 120 locals have been safely evacuated from the affected area and taken to safe areas. The fire broke out at a farmhouse Monday morning, but with the strong wind, flames soon spread to nearby mountains.
The deceased guide was a local farmhouse employee and was guiding a 22-member gang of firefighters into the forest. Three staff members who were taken to the hospital were also injured in the accident.
According to local media, deep clouds of smoke are shadowing on Zi Chang, a nearby jungle town. A year ago, a fire broke out in the area that killed 30 firefighters while trying to extinguish it.
