PublicNews18: The accountability court sent Mir Shakeel ur Rehman to jail on judicial remand
LAHORE: The accountability court has sent Mir Shakeel ur Rehman, editor-in-chief of Jang and Geo Group, to jail on judicial remand in a private property case.
Mir Shakeel-ur-Rehman was produced before Accountability Court Judge Jawadul Hassan for the fourth time on the expiry of his physical remand, where his lawyer Advocate Amjad Pervez gave arguments regarding his illegal arrest.
The accountability court heard the case briefly and after hearing the arguments of the parties, sent Mir Shakeel-ur-Rehman to jail on judicial remand till May 12.
It should be noted that Mir Shakeel-ur-Rehman bought 54 kanals of private property in Johar Town area of Lahore in 1986. The NAB summoned him on March 5 justifying this purchase.
On this occasion, Mir Shakeel-ur-Rehman presented all the documents of the land and also recorded his statement but when the NAB called him again for inquiry on March 12, he was arrested.
According to constitutional and legal experts, his arrest during the scrutiny of land documents was unwarranted as NAB law does not allow for the arrest of a businessman during an inquiry.
Two petitions were filed in the Lahore High Court, one for his bail and the other for his acquittal, which the court had dismissed and remarked that he could approach the same court again in due course.
